My review:

To me, this is not your ordinary team play shooter game. You need to constantly adapt to the changes of strategies every rounds and still be able to wipe out the other team. As a beginner, I recommend you to understand the mechanics of the game, for example, getting used to the guns (recoil patterns), maps and the usual spots people camp etc. Besides that, please don't jump straight into Competitive! Start by playing Casual, Demolition, Arms Race or even Deathmatch. Safer and easier for newbies.

I'm most likely going to talk a lot about Competitive (purely because I love it). So, this game mode is a ranked match. There's a whole rank system involved in this. When you first start the game, you have no rank at all. To get a rank you must win 10 competitive matches, although for every 2 wins you'll get a 21 hours cooldown. (This was recently implemented to avoid hackers and smurfs.) After winning 10 matches, you'll get assigned to a proper "rank class" which suits you best.

Smurfs: High rank players with alt accounts playing against Lower rank players.

If you get into Silver, don't feel bad. It's normal for beginners to get into Silvers. Now, to rank up there's no definite way for it. Some people say it depends on the wins:losses rate, while others think it depends on your position on the scoreboard and the amount of MVPs you get. For me, I could say I was lucky. After winning 10 matches, I was assigned to Silver Elite Master (SEM). Later that day, I won a match and was promoted to Gold Nova 1 (and I kept ranking up that whole week).

Here are a few things you should have when playing Competitive: a headset, a microphone (it's faster to talk when calling out than typing) and a team of friends. I personally think it's best to have a team to queue with because you know them, you know their skills and capabilities, plus it's easier to communicate. When I started playing, I had no friends to queue with so I had to solo-queue a lot. Solo-queueing is so bad because sometimes you'll get bad teammates, trolls and AFKs. To avoid this, add people along the way. This worked for me very well.

Last but not least, remember to always be positive throughout the game even if you're losing. Don't be that one salty player and throw the game. (Everyone will hate you for that!!) Also, keep on practicing and have fun.
